Information

Empire Orienteering Club invites you to Billygoat XXXIV!

The 2012 running of the Billygoat will return to the site of the 2010 Two-day Classic Championships, Moreau Lake State Park in Gansevoort, NY, 40 miles north of Albany (closest airport for anyone flying), and just minutes from exit 17S of the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87). The map and the terrain received rave reviews from the more than 400 competitors who attended that event.

For more information about the preceding 33 Billygoats, see the Billygoat.org website. This year's course is approximately 13 km, designed for advanced navigators, with the Billygoat tradition of the option to skip ONE control. All competitors who finish the course in 210 minutes (3:30:00) or less will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

Day-of registration will be $40 per person, but only if extra maps are available; you MUST contact the Billygoat registrar via e-mail by April 26th so we know to expect you (and if you earn a shirt, you may have to wait for it).

SportIdent electronic timing will be used. Any type of SI card may be used. If you do not have a SportIdent e-card, you may rent one for $3 (loss-waiver signature required). Please indicate on the registration form if you need to rent an e-card.

Recreational courses will be available for those accompanying Billygoat competitors as well as local orienteers; only Yellow/White (advanced-beginner) and Orange (intermediate) difficulties. Recreational courses will use pin-punches and card-stock punch cards. For this event only all recreational entries will be $6 per person/team/map.

Speedy Goat Sprint Relay (Saturday):

Following upon last year's success and fun times with the Speedy Goat sprint relay, the U.S. senior team will be organizing the 2nd annual edition, again preceeding the Billygoat on Saturday afternoon.

The venue is Peebles Island State Park, close to Albany, NY and approximately 40 miles from the Billygoat terrain. The island is largely wooded but has some open fields and some bare rock (no boulders), sandy soil, and small ponds or marshes; two parallel ridges run the length of the island, and there are uncrossable cliffs. Woody and/or prickly thickets appear here and there. A few man-made features (abandoned cars) also appear. Google terrain map  Current map details: 1:7,500 (may be printed at a different scale), contours 2.5 m. NOT ISSOM

Categories and Points:

We're changing up the categories from last year, adopting the US relays points system and will be awarding prizes in the following categories: 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 point classes. The points system is as follows:

Age Male Female
under 15 3 5
15-16 2 4
17-20 1 3
21-35 0 2
35-49 1 3
50-59 2 4
over 60 3 5

[ex. 15-year old female = 4 points; 47 year old male = 1 point; 23 year old male = 0 points]

Teams will consist of two runners, alternating order and each running 2 legs. Sum the two partners' points and round down to the nearest category. For example, 18-year old male + 47 year old female = 4 points -> 4 point category; 23 year old male + 37 year old male = 1 point -> 0 point category.

SI punching will be used, with a mass start at 2pm.

Planning to stay overnight? There are many, many motels in the area between Albany and Glens Falls (Northway exits 18-20) along the Adirondack Northway (I-87 north of Thruway exit 24), including a Motel 6 near Albany. Clifton Park (Northway exit 9, 13 mi from Albany) and Saratoga (Northway exits 13-15, ~20-25 mi from Albany) are the main large towns/small cities between Albany and Glens Falls; both have a nice selection of dining and/or shopping opportunities.

Camping will NOT be open or available at Moreau. KOA Saratoga is also not open that early in the season.
