In a continuing delightfully weird weather pattern, we had a simply gorgeous summer day for our autumn opening event. If anything, it was too warm, and too gorgeous, as one just felt like casually wandering through the beautiful park landscape. We had a nice turnout, including some new folks and some we haven’t seen in a while. Altogether there were 17 entries with 26 participants (one was a manual punch DNF, so does not appear on the results file).

Cynthia did a nice job with the course setting, and everyone seemed to enjoy her courses. There was one control on the Red course (#11) which proved to be problematic. The map in that area (as well as some others) is no longer very accurate, and this made it difficult for both control placement and control finding. Thankfully, I don’t think anyone felt like it ruined their day. I have begun looking into updating and possibly expanding this map, but it is as yet an unscheduled project.

There are several other things ahead of it on the priority list. One sort of nice problem we have is having many maps in our area, which means that there are many maps which need to be kept up-to-date. I am working on getting all our maps geo-referenced (which makes updating easier), while working to create some brand new maps, to keep us all excited about visiting new territory. We discuss priorities at our annual meetings, and I try to follow the decisions we make then.

I did notice at least one odd timing item in the printouts some of you received. That seemed to be fixed in the report from the computer software. So, if you have questions about the times shown on your printout, check the Results table below, which may be more accurate.

Thanks to everyone who attended! You are why we do this. BIG Thanks to Cynthia for taking on directing this, her first local Meet. [You too can learn to do this, and in the process learn a lot about orienteering and the way that land, water, and vegetation works. Talk to me or any EMPO Officer if you feel ready to try.]

And I sincerely hope we will see ALL of you (and more! Bring your friends!) at our next event at Switzkill Farm, on October 7. More info will be forthcoming, but this will again (as last year) be part of the Town of Berne Fall Harvest Festival. There will be other activities there throughout the day, which may be of interest to both adults and children.

Enjoy the woods! But as always, check for ticks.
