Despite negative weather predictions, we ended up with a very nice day. It was much cooler up on the hill than down in the valleys, and there was a nice breeze. The Park was quite crowded in the picnic areas, but they were mostly partiers and not hikers, so there was little conflict as we roamed the territory.

The course proved to be sufficiently challenging, and as intended no one was able to sweep the entire set of controls. And the rules also came into play, as Frank reached the most controls, but Glen got an equal number of points by hitting controls with higher point values, and then was the winner due to a shorter time. Some folks did not read the Rules ahead of time, or paid insufficient attention to them, as a number of them lost a lot of points by being overtime.

The most controversial control was #43, which a number of entrants were unable to find (though some did, so it was there). It was in a very rocky area, and it was hard to determine which rocks/cliffs you were searching in. The best approach seemed to be if you couldn’t find it soon, move on.

Some controls were visited by only one person, but you can figure that out for yourselves from the attached tables if you like.

Big thanks to David Harnett, Frank Boscoe, and Marc Largie for picking up most of the controls after the race. Sue H-T (who couldn’t attend on Saturday) went out on Sunday and got most of the rest.

And, of course thanks to all who attended. Your participation and enjoyment is what makes the effort to set these things up worthwhile. As an addendum, I received a very nice e-mail from Marshall, who liked the Score-O format, particularly for younger children. That to me was an interesting concept. I/we don’t generally think that way, because national/international competitive orienteering events are always sequential, from age 6 on up. But for local events it might be easier for beginners to start with Score-O courses, where failure to find one control does not leave you floundering, and you just move on to finding the next one. This is worth further discussion and study. One point though, is while it might seem easier to set up a Score-O event, it is in some ways harder. You likely will need to have more controls, and will need to cover a larger area. So it would seem to me that maybe one Score-O per season might be a good plan. But, as I said, more discussion is needed.

Finally, an extra thanks to Frank, who set up a Facebook ad about the event, which definitely proved to be worthwhile. Anything new which produces event entries is terrific.

Next up: a NEW MAP section! It is the Town of Berne “Switzkill Farm”, off of Albany County Rt. 1 (Switzkill Rd.) in Berne. This land abuts the Cole Hill State Forest, and our map of that name. Shorter courses will all be on the new section of the map, while longer ones may cross over onto the western portion of the Cole Hill map. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to the event.
