While the number of entrants was low (presumably due to the very threatening weather), those who showed up and competed seemed to very much enjoy both the normal Yellow course and the “Time-O”. “Time-O” is a relatively new format for an orienteering event. Something similar was tried recently at the April West Point “A Meet”. The format devised by our Meet Director (Frank Boscoe) was slightly different, and I think is a format we can use again in relatively easy areas: areas we have used frequently, and where there is not a high degree of navigational difficulty, for creating advanced courses.

You have blocks of time for certain segments of the total course. In this case there were 30 minutes for the 3X controls; another 30 minutes for the 5X controls, and a final 30 minutes for 10X controls.

This format creates some new mental challenges: it forces you to think about how long it is taking you to cover the terrain; it forces you to calculate expected timeframes to reach further controls; it forces you to make decisions on the basis of time and distance and terrain, which should be part of your plan for all orienteering events.

We will see about tweaking the format if/when we do this again in the future. Some suggestions made so far:
  • Offer two (or three or more) time levels; some folks may not want to commit to running/walking 90 minutes (even though you can of course only do as much as you like, which one entrant did, cutting off at 1 hour); so, for instance offer a 1 hour course (which could be just be two of the three segments of the full course), as well as the 90 minute course;
  • Reduce the time windows, so that those who wish to spend less time (say 1 hour as opposed to 90 minutes), have 20 minutes for each block instead of 30 minutes;
  • Use different colors (on the map) for the control numbers in the different time windows, to make the groupings easier to identify.
I’m sure there are other variations on this theme. If you have suggestions, please pass them along.

A couple of notes on the results:
  • There was a major time sync issue with the Start box, so everyone’s Start time was adjusted by 1 hour;
  • Further, there was a less noticeable time sync issue involving both the Start box and some controls, so everyone was allowed an additional 1 minute to get credit for punching controls within the stated timeframes [for anyone planning to do an event like this, it has become obvious that you must re-set the time on all controls quite near to when you will be using them];
  • While under the Rules ties (in Points) are simply ties, the results are sorted so that ties in points are broken by the person with the shorter total time being listed ahead.
Because of a change in policy of the DEC regarding money changing hands in this park, we used Event Register for this event, a first for an EMPO local event but commonplace for A meets. Almost everyone used it to sign up and pay for the event making us (mostly) legal!
