After another dreary and wet early morning, the weather began to improve as the start window opened. By the time we were done, it was a beautiful autumn afternoon, though still a bit wet when you ran through the brush and marshes.

One of the questions we have always had about scheduling our events is whether or not having them back-to-back over consecutive weekends would cut the attendance (because people will choose one or the other), or increase attendance, because the continued availability of events will keep them coming. On the basis of this weekend and last weekend, it seems to be a wash; a number of folks did both, but many did one or the other. I believe that is the simple result of other things people have on their personal schedules, so the more events we can offer, the better. They don’t cannibalize each other. But, to do that, we of course need more folks to take on directing events. If you think you want to give it try, contact me. Meanwhile, I’d be interested in your thoughts in general about scheduling some of our events close together, so please send them along.

Anyway, back to the event at hand: Cole Hill. The loggers hadn’t started; the rain stopped; and everyone came home safely and successfully. What more could you ask for? There were a few good points made about map adjustments, which I’ll work on, but mostly the map held up very well.  The times were within the range I was targeting/expecting.

The results are below. Please let me know if you see any problems. And, on that note, there apparently was a problem with the results from Columbus Day, in that Glen missed a control, which means all the others on the Red course move up one slot, and Doug had the best time (this will get fixed on the web site at some point).

Finally, EMPO has an amazing number of members headed to the North American Orienteering Championships this coming weekend in Pennsylvania. My rough count is ten, and I may well be missing some. That’s just terrific, and a clear sign that we are growing in depth, as well as numbers. Thanks for being a part of it. More thanks to those who came to Cole Hill today (you made it worthwhile!); and to Sue, who handled Registration and Training; and to Will, who picked up the White/Yellow inner-loop (plus 1 Red/Green).

If I don’t see you at the NAOC in PA, I hope to see you at the Club Champs at Woods Hollow on Nov 3. Enjoy the season!
