Lock 7, Niskayuna - June 5th, 2010

Lock 7 might be my favorite park in the Albany area. It's small, has lots of trails, and has scenic creeks, hillsides, and gullies. The beginner (white and yellow) courses can be very pretty, and there are enough spots to put intermediate (orange level) controls to keep things interesting. However there isn't much room to place advanced (green or red) level routes here. There's an active canal lock---"Lock 7"---perhaps the only orienteering map in the world with one. After your course, you can watch the boats go up and down in the lock as they cruise the Mohawk.

So I set up white, yellow, orange, and score-o courses. I hoped the score-o course would be interesting for those who've orienteered here many times. The score-o course had 20 controls to choose from with a 90 minute time limit. Participants in score-o can get whichever controls they like, in whichever order they like. Each of the 20 controls had a point value of 1, 2, 3, or 4 points based on its difficulty and distance from the start, for a total of 39 points possible. Also, there was a severe overtime penalty of 3 points per minute over 90 minutes. (Among tie scores, the finisher with the lower overall time wins.)

The weather was great: warm and humid but a slight breeze; overcast but with brief peeks of sun. The best overall gauge of "warmth" was the amount of water drunk at water stops. I put out one gallon at each of two controls, and only about 1/2 gallon total was left at the end. The forecasted scattered thunderstroms held off until the meet was done and all controls picked up---perfect!

We had some fierce competition on the score-o, with Glen Tryson and Dave Webber getting perfect scores (39). Fred Pilon (38) and Janet Tryson (35) had almost all of them except for each missing one control due to dense (but not prickly) vegetation. Visibility was greatly reduced from even just two weeks ago when I field-checked locations. Honorable mention to Phil Hawkes-Teeter who also had all of them but one, but couldn't quite find a place for control #102 in his route and wound up a few minutes overtime.

Control #102 (on the yellow, orange, and score-o courses) was my personal favorite. (Unlike parents, course setters can have favorites.) It was placed on a cleared hilltop by a powerline pylon. The flag was clearly visible from a hilltop 350 meters away, among other spots, as might have been seen on any of those courses. But as they say in Pittsburgh---you can't get there from here.

From the splits on score-o and orange, it can be seen that several orienteers had problems with controls #101, #31, and #32, which again did suffer from visibility issues in the suddenly sprouted vegetation. I apologize to those of you who missed out.

This was the first meet I directed and I look forward to doing it again. I appreciate the many club veterans who helped out with advice and on-site: Gabor Babok for running the SI equipment and last-minute control placement (phew!); Janet Tryson and Phil Hawkes-Teeter for getting supplies to me; again, Janet for helping with registration, and Phil for OCAD advice and map editing assistance, Frank Boscoe and Glen Tryson for course setting advice, and again, to Glen and Janet Tryson for helping set up registration and pick up controls. You were all very helpful and supportive, even when I was being a little naive ("sure...I can set 30 controls in two hours...").

(Notes to future first-time meet directors: people will be glad to help if asked, and you will gain the magical ability to never be mad at poor control placement again. It's also alot of fun.)
