Saratoga Spa State Park

The first frost of the fall gave way to a mostly sunny day in the 50s, with the leaves close to peak color. The turnout was good, enhanced by local press coverage.

In my first time as a solo course-setter, I learned a few useful things, some before the meet and some after:

  • There are no symbols, as far as I can discern, for a control located at a seat in an outdoor amphitheatre. So instead, I put the SPAC control by the eight-foot perimeter fence.
  • When placing a control by an high fence, it's proper to indicate which side of the fence the control is on. (One competitor, finding himself on the wrong side of the fence, chose to climb it anyway. The last time someone tried to do this was during a Journey concert, which resulted in a small fine).
  • A hill can be less than a meter high, if shown on the map as such. Not to be confused with a knoll, which is shown on a map as a brown dot and on a clue sheet as a black dot. Not to be confused with a boulder, which is shown on a map as a black dot and on a clue sheet as a black triangle.
