Upcoming Events, Aug 30 and Sept 2

posted Aug 25, 2017, 4:00 PM by Janet Tryson
If you (like many of us!) just can't live without orienteering, there are two events this week within minutes to a couple of hours' drive of Albany.

First up is an evening event on Wednesday, August 30, with registration from 5:30-6:30 pm. No preregistration needed; this event is open to all. Parking will be at the Lock 7 lot in Niskayuna, off River Road. Will Kennerly is preparing your challenge and looking forward to you stopping by.

Then, on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, September 2, the so-called U.S. Corn Maze Orienteering Championships will take place at Mike's Maze in Sunderland, MA, minutes from exit 24 of Interstate 91 (coordinates 42.4639393, -72.6074464), north of Springfield, MA. The first incarnation (held in 2010 or 2011) of Corn Maze Orienteering as a competition was the inspiration of Peter Gagarin, who lives nearby. This year's events, organized by NEOC's Steve Richardson and LROC's J-J Cote, will include two events (likely a "classic" and a "sprint" ... meaning "short" and "shorter"), followed by a break while runners recover and refuel (nearby Bub's BBQ is the standard gathering-place) and trash-talk about who will take the overall championship title. Also on the schedule if you choose to accept the challenge is a Trail O competition, accomplished almost entire from the maze viewing platform; and a night-O (bring your flashlights or headlamps). All races are fast (or not), furious (for the most competitive), and a lot of fun. Note that there's a limit of 50 competitors, so be sure to pre-register if you think you want to attend. First starts will take place ~3:30 PM. See the link above for much more about the event.

In September our first Fall event will be held at Saratoga Spa State Park, on Saturday, Sept. 9. The gathering place is typically the Geyser Parking area in the center of the park, but watch the Schedule page for more details.
